  • Man City stance on potential sale unclear, with Enzo Maresca yet to conduct his squad assessment

Atletico Madrid have registered interest in Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a new report.

The 27-year-old joined Manchester City from AC Milan last summer for £46.5 million and made a strong start to life at the Etihad Stadium, contributing a goal and an assist in a world-class debut performance against Wolves to establish himself as a regular starter in the opening months of the campaign.

His level of involvement dropped after the New Year, however, as he started just nine of his final 20 Premier League appearances under recently departed manager Pep Guardiola.

The interest from Atletico Madrid arrives as Diego Simeone‘s side plan a significant midfield overhaul ahead of the 2026-27 season, having already agreed a deal with Wolves for Joao Gomes with an official announcement pending.

Reijnders has previously attracted interest from Arsenal and Juventus this season, making this the latest in a growing list of suitors for the Netherlands international.

Report: Atletico open talks with City for Reijnders

According to Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports, Atletico Madrid have registered interest in Reijnders ahead of the summer window, though City’s stance on a potential sale remains unclear at this stage.

Arsenal plotting stunning summer swoop for Manchester City’s Tijjani Reijnders

The Spanish club appreciate it will be a difficult deal to complete, with Reijnders contracted to City until June 2030 and incoming manager Enzo Maresca yet to conduct a full assessment of the squad he has inherited.

Any decision on the Dutchman’s future is likely to hinge on that process before City communicate a clear position to interested parties.

What is the wider context for Reijnders’ City future?

Reijnders finished the season with seven goals and eight assists across 47 appearances in all competitions, though he fell down Guardiola’s pecking order as the season went on.

Guardiola cited his box-to-box runs and intensity as exactly what City needed in that moment – a reminder of what Reijnders offers when given a consistent run of games.

Whether Maresca views him as a central figure in his plans or a saleable asset will be the defining question of his summer at the Etihad Stadium.

At £46.5 million paid just 12 months ago and four years remaining on his deal, City hold considerable leverage and Atletico will need to table a persuasive offer if they are to tempt director of football Hugo Viana into sanctioning a sale at this stage of the rebuild.

'Lacked that authority Jurgen had'

'Lacked that authority Jurgen had': Arne Slot sitting alone in the Anfield dugout[Getty Images]

There were question marks over whether the players truly believed in Arne Slot's methods.

One club source, who was also at Liverpool during Jurgen Klopp's tenure, said: "Arne's a great person but you always felt he lacked that authority Jurgen had and that became more evident when things weren't going well on the pitch."

The departure of veterans Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and now Ibrahima Konate is telling too.

Slot was never going to be Klopp but he won the Premier League title at the first time of asking and deserves immense credit for that. For that alone, he will be a part of Liverpool's illustrious history.

The understanding is that FSG initially backed Slot to rebuild the supporter faith that has waned considerably during this campaign's struggles.

But, as the season concluded, the belief became that delaying the decision which looked increasingly inevitable would be unfair on the squad and damaging to preparations for 2026-27.

Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate and contact has already been made, with his immediate availability also playing a part in severing ties with Slot.

For Slot, there is no bad blood with Liverpool, but he is of the belief that he has been dealt a tough card with the situation this past season.

Liverpool's points tally fell from 84 in 2024-25 to 60 in 2025-26; with the swing of minus 24 the biggest drop by any ever-present Premier League side across two campaigns.

There was no sign of Liverpool reversing that shift in the last few months of the season.

Slot finished his first campaign lifting the Premier League trophy in front of the Kop and ended his second sitting alone in the dugout. That was six days ago, when it seemed entirely like Liverpool were sticking with the Dutchman.

But modern-day football is brutal. This is a club firmly in transition and, sadly for Slot, Liverpool want a new man to manage that change.

Mikel Arteta reveals why Gabriel took crucial penalty in Champions League final

Mikel Arteta reveals why Gabriel took crucial penalty in Champions League final: Gabriel sent his spot-kick over the crossbar as Arsenal were beaten in Budapest (Reuters)

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that Gabriel Magalhaes had asked to take the crucial penalty he missed in the Champions League final.

Gabriel stepped up for the fifth spot-kick in the shootout needing to score to take Paris Saint-Germain to sudden death, but skied his effort over the crossbar.

His miss meant that PSG secured back-to-back Champions League crowns, with Arsenal left to rue their missed opportunities having battled hard to take it to penalties.

It was the Brazilian defender’s first penalty for Arsenal, and came with Arteta having removed a number of his regular penalty takers.

The Arsenal manager made six changes as the game went to extra time, with all of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz substituted and thus unable to participate in the shootout.

“He wanted to take it," Arteta said of Gabriel. "Normally the penalty takers would be Bukayo [Saka], Martin [Odegaard] and Kai [Havertz]. But we knew if the game went to extra-time and penalties, different players would have to step forward."

Eberechi Eze also missed the target with his penalty, with Viktor Gyokeres, Declan Rice and Gabriel Martinelli registering in the shootout.

Rice gave his backing to Eze and Gabriel after a “cruel” ending to the campaign.

"To miss a penalty in a Champions League final, obviously it's not nice,” the midfielder said to TNT Sports.

"But we love them and we're with them. It happens in football. They're not going to be the last players to miss penalties in finals.

"Everyone has missed a penalty and without those two this season we wouldn't have won the Premier League, that's for sure.

"Gabriel, I've run out of words for him as a person and as a player. Eze has scored some crucial goals for us this season.

"It happens. It's football and it's cruel. We take the positives and keep going."

Real Madrid midfielder could be set for a shock loan move to Juventus this summer

Real Madrid are gearing up for major changes this summer, including Jose Mourinho coming in as the new head coach.

Although Mourinho’s return marks a reset, the fate of certain stars will not change, including Eduardo Camavinga, who looks increasingly likely to leave the Santiago Bernabeu after a horrid 2025/26 campaign.

Camavinga has already been linked with an exit, with Juventus now emerging as a potential suitor.

Loan move on the cards?

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as cited by Defensa Central, Camavinga could leave Real Madrid on loan to Juventus this summer.

The arrangement would allow the Frenchman to remain a Real Madrid player, something he has consistently expressed a desire for, while getting regular minutes in one of Europe’s top leagues.

The Italian report comes amid growing indications that Mourinho does not have Camavinga in his plans for next season.

Real Madrid prefer a permanent sale

However, those within Real Madrid believe a permanent sale would be the more sensible solution.

With Camavinga contracted until 2029, the club’s hierarchy estimates he could fetch between €35 and €40 million, a fee that would free up both wages and squad space for Mourinho’s rebuild.

This is hardly surprising as Camavinga has never nailed down a regular starting position across five seasons at the club, and his failure to develop as expected.

This is coupled with recurring injuries and the notorious red card against Bayern Munich, which has worn thin with the fanbase and the hierarchy alike.

To make things worse, Camavinga was omitted from France’s World Cup squad as well, which indicates simply how much the midfielder’s stock has fallen.

Kylian Mbappé named Real Madrid’s Player of the Season

Kylian Mbappé named Real Madrid’s Player of the Season: Kylian Mbappé named Real Madrid’s Player of the SeasonKylian Mbappé named Real Madrid’s Player of the Season

Kylian Mbappé (27) has been named Real Madrid’s Player of the Season, the Spanish club announced on Wednesday.

Having already won the award at the end of the 2024–25 season, the Frenchman has repeated the feat in his second campaign with La Casa Blanca. Top scorer in the Spanish league with 25 goals to his name, Mbappé is also the top scorer of the season in the Champions League, where he has netted 15 goals. Across all competitions, the Paris-born player has thus proved decisive on 49 occasions (42 goals and seven assists) in 44 matches.

An individual success that inevitably stands in stark contrast to Real Madrid’s repeated collective failures over the past two years. Selected by Didier Deschamps for the 2026 World Cup, Mbappé will now have the opportunity to add another World Cup trophy to his collection – his second after 2018 – as he is now just four goals away from becoming the competition’s all-time leading scorer.

Inter Milan Push Ahead in Curtis Jones Talks as Liverpool Face Summer Decision

Inter Milan have intensified their interest in Curtis Jones after fresh discussions with Liverpool officials in Monaco, as the Serie A giants continue shaping their summer rebuild around younger midfield talent.

According to the original source from Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio met Liverpool counterpart Richard Hughes during talks in the Principality, with Jones emerging once again as a key topic between the clubs.

The report states that Jones remains “one of the most appreciated names” inside Inter’s recruitment department. While no agreement has yet been reached, negotiations are said to be progressing beyond exploratory conversations.

Liverpool’s academy graduate has long been admired across Europe for his blend of technical calm, tactical intelligence and physical maturity. At 24, Jones has reached a stage where his next career decision could define whether he becomes a permanent fixture at Anfield or seeks a more central role elsewhere.

Inter believe he fits perfectly into the profile they are targeting. Young enough to develop further, but experienced enough to handle elite competition immediately.

Liverpool Midfield Depth Creates Questions

Liverpool’s midfield evolution over the past two seasons has created fierce competition for places. Jones has often impressed when selected, yet injuries and tactical reshuffles have occasionally disrupted his rhythm.

There remains significant admiration for the England international inside the club. His versatility allows him to operate as a controlling midfielder, an advanced No 8 or even in wider transitional roles when required. Few players developed through Liverpool’s academy possess his technical security under pressure.

However, modern football increasingly revolves around guarantees of minutes and influence. Inter Milan can offer Jones something potentially difficult to secure consistently at Liverpool, namely a central role within a side expected to challenge domestically and in Europe.

The original Italian report describes the transfer as “more than a possibility” despite the absence of a final agreement. That wording alone suggests negotiations have substance rather than representing routine transfer window noise.

Liverpool are understood to value Jones highly, both financially and strategically. Any deal would likely require Inter Milan to make a substantial proposal capable of persuading the Premier League side to part with a homegrown player entering his peak years.

Inter Milan Vision Could Tempt Jones

Inter Milan’s attraction is obvious. The club have rebuilt intelligently in recent seasons, blending experienced leadership with emerging talent. Jones would arrive at a side capable of competing for Serie A honours while also offering Champions League football.

Italian football may also suit aspects of his game. The slower tempo compared to the Premier League could enhance his composure in possession and allow his positional intelligence to flourish further.

Jones has always played with a calmness that stands out in high-pressure moments. His ability to glide away from challenges and recycle possession under pressure has drawn praise from coaches throughout his development.

Inter’s interest reportedly stretches back to January, showing this is not a sudden opportunistic enquiry. They have monitored his situation carefully and now appear prepared to advance discussions seriously.

For Liverpool, the decision may depend on wider squad planning. Midfield depth remains essential across a long season, particularly with domestic and European demands increasing every year.

Selling Jones would remove a player who understands the club’s identity and tactical demands instinctively. Yet modern transfer strategy also demands difficult choices when strong offers emerge.

Summer Outcome Remains Unclear

At present, there is no final breakthrough between Liverpool and Inter Milan. Talks remain ongoing and further meetings are expected in the coming weeks.

What feels increasingly clear is that Jones is attracting genuine elite-level interest. Inter Milan are not simply monitoring from afar. They are actively exploring whether a deal can be completed.

Liverpool supporters will likely feel conflicted. Jones represents one of the club’s most successful academy stories of recent years, a footballer whose development has mirrored the patience and resilience required to survive at the highest level.

Yet football careers move quickly. Ambitious clubs move decisively. Inter Milan see Jones as a player capable of strengthening their midfield immediately while still possessing years of growth ahead.

Whether Liverpool ultimately choose to resist or negotiate remains uncertain, but this developing story appears far from finished.

Milan revolution: Why Ibrahimovic was not sacked and remains key to new project

Milan revolution: Why Ibrahimovic was not sacked and remains key to new project: Milan revolution: Why Ibrahimovic was not sacked and remains key to new projectMilan revolution: Why Ibrahimovic was not sacked and remains key to new project

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not directly employed by Milan, so he technically can’t be sacked by the Rossoneri, yet he has a key role in the club’s rebuild, also because he holds shares in RedBird, reports Gazzetta.

The role of Ibrahimovic at Milan has been widely debated since the ex-striker was appointed as RedBird’s ‘Operating Partner’ and ‘Senior Advisor to Ownership’ in  December 2023.

Milan revolution: why Ibrahimovic was not sacked

In the following season, Ibra took a leading role in shaping the team, making significant contributions to the selection of new signings and coaches, first Paulo Fonseca and then Sérgio Conceição.

As the Rossoneri failed to secure qualification for Europe in 2024-25, Ibra was overshadowed by new sporting director Igli Tare and new coach Massimiliano Allegri, but now that a new revolution has begun, Zlatan has taken centre stage again.

Ibra is the only survivor of Milan’s overhaul, which saw Allegri, Tare, Giorgio Furlani (CEO), and Geoffrey Moncada (Technical Director) sacked by the club the day after the end of the 2024-25 season, with Milan out of a Champions League spot.

Milan ultras have also been calling for Ibra’s dismissal, but technically, the ex-striker is not directly employed by the club and has no official role there.

Furthermore, according to Gazzetta, Ibrahimovic is also a shareholder of Cardinale’s RedBird.

The report claims that Ibrahimovic agreed to buy stakes in the American fund months after Paolo Maldini had rejected the same offer.

Maldini was sacked by Milan in June 2023, and Ibrahimovic was hired as RedBird’s Senior Advisor the following December.

Arsenal icon Thierry Henry and PSG cult hero Presnel Kimpembe are poised to take the UEFA Champions League trophy to the pitch before Saturday’s Champions League final between Les Pariesiens and the Gunners, Le Parisien understands. Traditionally, two former players of the two finalists present the trophy before the final. Last year, Argentine duo Javier Pastore and Javier Zanetti delivered Europe’s most coveted trophy before PSG’s thrashing of Inter Milan in Munich.

Kimpembe, who joined Qatar SC last summer on the back of PSG’s maiden Champions League title, has confirmed to Le Parisien that he has been chosen by his formative club to deliver the trophy. “It’s a great honor to represent Paris Saint-Germain in this Champions League final. I hope it’ll bring luck to the team and to all Parisian supporters.”

His Arsenal counterpart in Budapest could be another World Cup winner for France. The outlet understands that none other than Thierry Henry is Arsenal’s favourite choice to deliver the Champions League trophy. However, his punditry role for CBS could prevent him from accepting the offer.

Crystal Palace goalscorer Jean-Philippe Mateta, speaking to TNT Sports: "I feel fantastic. We did it. First time in Europe. I just want to celebrate, and I just want to party. This guy [former Palace defender Joel Ward was part of the broadcast team] has to celebrate with us too.

"It is incredible, we gave everything. I told you about the intensity they were going to put in. I am tired right now. I gave everything. That's why we win today.

"I am always with them [fans]. They support me as a player a lot and as a team they're always behind us. We did it for them too."

Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's something you dream of, but you don't think it's reality. Today we showed it's reality. I am just proud of everyone past and present that helped us get to this point.

"We played 60 games this season. We had times when we weren't winning. But if it all meant that we got here and won it we'd do it all over again.

"It's amazing. The same feeling as when we won the FA Cup. Just pure delight."

Did you know?

  • Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta was the third Frenchman to score for an English club in a major European final after Paul Pogba with Man Utd (2017 Europa League) and Olivier Giroud with Chelsea (2019 Europa League).
  • Maxence Lacroix and Tyrick Mitchell both made their 55th appearances of the season for Crystal Palace - only Harvey Barnes (57) and Martín Zubimendi (56) have made more among Premier League players this term across all competitions.

Carrick to face the media amid job talk

Carrick to face the media amid job talk: Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick[Getty Images]

Michael Carrick faces the media this afternoon for the first time since it became known he was the preferred candidate of chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox to take over as head coach at Manchester United on a permanent basis.

Talks are thought to be happening around that situation, although it is not entirely clear when we are likely to get an announcement.

United always wanted to wait until the end of the season before making a decision, although there is a school of thought that an announcement ahead of the final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest would be better – certainly if he wasn't getting it, there would be a chance for fans to acknowledge the work he has done.

As things stand, he has been nominated for the Premier League's manager of the year prize after winning 10 out of his 15 games in charge of Manchester United.

I wouldn't expect Carrick to engage on the inevitable questions but it would be interesting to know if he intends to speak to the fans from the pitch after Sunday's game as is tradition.

Man United star Matthijs de Ligt to miss World Cup after undergoing back surgery

Man United star Matthijs de Ligt to miss World Cup after undergoing back surgery:

Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has undergone surgery to finally resolve a back issue that has kept him sidelined for six months, ending his season and World Cup ambitions.

The 26-year-old made a strong start to what quickly turned into a nightmare campaign, having been unable to feature since a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in late November.

United confirmed he has undergone a "corrective procedure" after failing to return to competitive action following rehabilitation efforts on the grass last month.

The club stated that the Netherlands international will begin "a new phase of his recovery" and expects him back for United in the early stages of the 2026-27 season.

De Ligt posted a photo in a hospital bed with a thumb up alongside an Instagram caption: "After six months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left.

De Ligt is yet to play under Michael Carrick (Owen Humphreys/PA) (PA Wire)De Ligt is yet to play under Michael Carrick (Owen Humphreys/PA) (PA Wire)

“I’m disappointed I couldn’t help the team the last six months and obviously missing out on the World Cup but I am looking forward to doing everything to get back in front of the fans and feeling better again."

De Ligt joined United from Bayern Munich in August 2024 and made 42 appearances across all competitions in his maiden season at Old Trafford.

However, he has been limited to just 14 outings this term, and it has now been confirmed he will not be adding to that tally.

The news of his surgery also means he will not be able to represent the Netherlands at the World Cup this summer.

De Ligt has 52 international caps and has been in the Netherlands squad at the last three major tournaments, although he was an unused substitute throughout Euro 2024.

His absence is still a blow for the Netherlands, though, as he could have been a contender to play alongside captain Virgil van Dijk in the Dutch backline.

The Netherlands are due to begin their World Cup campaign against Japan on 14 June, before facing Sweden six days later.

Ronald Koeman’s side will finish their group stage campaign by taking on Tunisia in Kansas City on 25 June.

Nottingham Forest Transfer News: Mateus Mane Race Takes Fresh Twist

Nottingham Forest appear ready to make one of the more intriguing moves of the summer, with Sports Boom reporting that the club are monitoring Wolves teenager Mateus Mane.

The 18-year-old attacker has already attracted attention from Liverpool and Manchester United, but Forest’s interest carries an extra layer of intrigue because of Vitor Pereira’s previous connection with the player.

Sports Boom report that Pereira is “preparing to refresh his options” after guiding Forest away from danger, and Mane fits the profile of a club seeking value, development potential, and attacking spark.

Pereira Reunion Could Matter

The key point here is trust. Pereira knows Mane, having worked with him at Wolves, and Sports Boom state that sources insist he “was always convinced Mane would develop into one of English football’s most exciting talents”.

That matters. Young players often choose pathways, not merely clubs. Liverpool and United can offer prestige, but Forest may be able to offer minutes, responsibility, and a manager who already understands his development.

Mane “signed his first professional contract under Pereira”, which gives Forest a genuine angle in a race where they may not win on wages or status alone.

Wolves Relegation Opens Door

Wolves’ relegation changes everything. Sports Boom describe the situation as a “major rebuild”, with Rob Edwards potentially needing funds. If Wolves decide to sell, the market could move quickly.

Liverpool and Manchester United “remain favourites”, which is understandable. Their pulling power is significant. Yet Forest can present a different pitch, one built around first team opportunity rather than squad depth.

For Mane, that could be decisive. At 18, development depends on timing, coaching, and regular football. Forest may not be the obvious destination, but they could be the clever one.

Transfer Battle Worth Watching

This is exactly the type of recruitment Forest should be exploring. Mane is young, technically exciting, and already familiar with Premier League football. He would not arrive as the finished product, but that is precisely the point.

The report from Sports Boom suggests Forest are alert, ambitious, and willing to challenge bigger clubs when an opportunity appears. If Pereira can sell the project, this could become far more than a speculative enquiry.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Nottingham Forest perspective, this feels like the kind of transfer link that should excite supporters. Forest have spent recent years trying to build stability, and now the next step has to be smarter recruitment, not simply bigger names.

Mateus Mane would represent ambition with logic. He is 18, already admired by elite clubs, and has a previous relationship with Vitor Pereira. That gives Forest a story to tell him. Not just, “come here”, but, “come here because we know how to develop you”.

That could matter more than people think. At Liverpool or Manchester United, Mane may find himself waiting behind established stars. At Forest, there could be a clearer pathway, especially if Pereira wants pace, bravery, and unpredictability in attack.

Supporters will know that beating bigger clubs to a player like this is never easy. Yet Forest should not be passive. If Wolves are vulnerable after relegation, Forest must test the situation.

This is the type of move that can shift perception. Young, hungry, high ceiling, Premier League ready, and available because of circumstance. For Forest fans, that feels like a gamble worth taking.

'We've just got that that bond' - Pickford on Everton loyalty

'We've just got that that bond' - Pickford on Everton loyalty: Jordan Pickford and Wayne Rooney[Getty Images]

A few months before Jordan Pickford made his England debut in 2017, he joined Everton from Sunderland for an initial £25m.

Later that summer, Wayne Rooney, who had left Everton in 2004 and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during 13 years at Manchester United, returned to Goodison Park.

"There was a price tag on me when I was being bought - the most expensive British keeper - so there was that pressure," Pickford told his former team-mate on The Wayne Rooney Show. "I've always enjoyed the pressure and I knew I had to do something early to get the fans behind me.

"In your first game, we won 1-0 and you scored the header and I made a decent save in my first home Premier League game at Goodison, so I set myself off on a good stall."

Rooney was instantly impressed with Pickford's performances,

"At the time I thought, 'this could be Everton and England's number one goalkeeper for a long time'," he says.

Nine years later and Pickford is just that - and in October signed a new contract to keep him with the Toffees until 2029.

But since he joined, Everton have not finished higher than eighth in the Premier League and they are in danger of missing out on European football for an eighth successive season.

During the interview, Rooney asked Pickford about his decision to stay.

"I don't agree, but a lot of people say 'why haven't you moved on from Everton?'

"For you to be so loyal, to what you have been to the club, it's quite rare these days.

"With your ability, you can say: 'Well, do you want to go and play Champions League?' But you've stuck with Everton. Why is it?"

Pickford, who has been voted fans' Player of the Year in three of the past four years, says: "We've just got that that bond really... you know what it's like here, the people.

"The gaffer [David Moyes] calls it the 'People's Club'. The staff are brilliant and it's where we live and go to the games. We just love it, my family love it.

"We know Everton should be in the European spots, but we know how hard it's been over the last few years and a rollercoaster we've been on, but they've been nothing but good to me.

"They took a chance on me as a 22-year-old kid and, I've repaid them, and I just love being here. Goodison, great memories, and the new stadium, it is moving forward.

"When you came back, when I first signed, we were in the Europa League. So if we sustained that, those questions wouldn't happen: 'Why is England's number one at Everton?' But people don't realise how big a club Everton is.

FA Cup final preview: Team news, talking points and key stats

FA Cup final preview: Team news, talking points and key stats: Calum McFarlane and Pep Guardiola share an embrace[Getty Images]

The 145th FA Cup final could be Pep Guardiola's last shot at silverware as Manchester City manager.

Chelsea, in crisis for much of the campaign, stand between him and a 20th trophy with the club.

A season that promised so much has turned into a nightmare for the Stamford Bridge outfit. Enzo Maresca's departure as head coach in January triggered a tumultuous spell under Liam Rosenior, marked by significant decline in performance and professionalism among several players in the squad.

Yet under interim head coach Calum McFarlane, Chelsea edged past Leeds in the semi-finals, and last weekend's 1-1 draw at Liverpool showed signs of rekindled spirit. McFarlane was also in charge in January – in his first interim spell after Maresca's exit - when the Blues snatched a 1-1 draw at City.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez missed the Liverpool game with concussion but could return. Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho are doubts. Estevao, Jesse Derry and Jamie Gittens are all out.

As shown in the graphic below, either Chelsea or City have been involved in each of the last nine FA Cup finals. However, they have had limited success with City winning twice and Chelsea just once.

The graphic lists the last nine FA Cup finals and their results: Arsenal 2–1 Chelsea — 2016–17 Chelsea 1–0 Manchester United — 2017–18 Manchester City 6–0 Watford — 2018–19 Arsenal 2–1 Chelsea — 2019–20 Leicester City 1–0 Chelsea — 2020–21 Liverpool 0–0 Chelsea (Liverpool won 6–5 on penalties) — 2021–22 Manchester City 2–1 Manchester United — 2022–23 Manchester United 2–1 Manchester City — 2023–24 Crystal Palace 1–0 Manchester City — 2024–25[BBC]

Although it would be foolish to rule out Chelsea, there is no doubt City are the big favourites.

Guardiola's side may come up just short in the Premier League title race – they are two points behind Arsenal with two games to play – but a domestic cup double is a rare feat; this would only be the sixth time this has ever happened.

City will also be keen to right the wrongs of the last two seasons, in which they've lost two FA Cup finals in timid fashion.

A year ago, they were beaten by Crystal Palace after Eberechi Eze's goal and Omar Marmoush's saved penalty. In 2024, local rivals Manchester United stunned Guardiola's side.

Guardiola, who has been linked with an end-of-season exit for much of the campaign, will not want to sign off his time at City with just a fourth major final loss with the club. After a raft of changes to the team for Wednesday's clash with Palace in the Premier League, a win under the Wembley arch now looks to be the clear priority.

However, Guardiola has confirmed that Rodri remains a doubt for the game. He has not played since the win over Arsenal on April 19.

Pep Guardiola offers major FA Cup final line-up hint with clear Bournemouth message

Pep Guardiola offers major FA Cup final line-up hint with clear Bournemouth message: Pep Guardiola offers major FA Cup final line-up hint with clear Bournemouth messagePep Guardiola offers major FA Cup final line-up hint with clear Bournemouth message
  • Guardiola insists Bournemouth will have no impact on his Man City lineup for the FA Cup final
  • Man City manager’s one-word answer underlines his total focus on Wembley
  • City face Bournemouth in the Premier League on Tuesday before Aston Villa on the final day

Pep Guardiola has made clear that Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League fixtures will play absolutely no part in his team selection for Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley.

With City facing Bournemouth away on Tuesday and Aston Villa at home on the final day of the Premier League season – games that could yet have massive title implications – questions have been raised about whether Guardiola might factor those fixtures into his thinking when naming his line-up against Chelsea.

Manchester City are two points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal heading into the final lap of a gruelling title race, with the Blues needing a favour from Burnley or Crystal Palace to stand a chance of lifting a ninth league title.

Predicted Starting XI: Chelsea vs Manchester City (FA Cup Final)

Bournemouth will not impact FA Cup final XI, says Pep

Asked directly how much Bournemouth away would influence his team selection against Chelsea, Guardiola was as brief as he has ever been.

“Zero. It’s a final of the FA Cup,” the City manager said, having made six changes to his starting XI for City’s 3-0 league win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

The answer is entirely consistent with the philosophy Guardiola has maintained throughout his nine years at the Etihad Stadium – that every competition deserves to be treated with the same respect, and that finals in particular, demand nothing less than maximum commitment.

He made virtually the same point in his pre-Brentford press conference last week when discussing his approach to cup football, insisting he works harder preparing for those games rather than treating them as secondary to the league.

Will John Stones start for Man City vs Chelsea?

On whether he can put sentiment aside when picking his team in cases like John Stones, who is leaving at the end of the season, Guardiola added: “A little bit, but I try to be what I believe.

“Last game (in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton), the people started to sing, ‘Johnny, Johnny Stones’ and I said, ‘OK, they paid for tickets, John Stones must play!’ – so sometimes.

“They feel relieved, relaxed” – Pep Guardiola reacts to Bernardo Silva and John Stones exit announcements

“Normally, no. Normally I try to be what is required for the team in that moment, or the players I feel fit more – many reasons! (Is that quite hard?) Do you know what is hard? Today, six players are not even selected, six! That is hard.

“And players that helped us a lot to be in the final, going where we are, they are not even on the bench tomorrow. That is really, really tough. But, unfortunately it is what it is.”

City have already lifted the Carabao Cup this season and are still alive in the Premier League title race, with Arsenal needing to drop points in their final two games for the Blues to have any chance.

Saturday’s final represents the clearest opportunity of the week to guarantee silverware and Guardiola is treating it with exactly that weight.

Liverpool will be heading into next season with great uncertainty over their forward line.

Alexander Isak will be the only senior, fit option going into the season - and his reliability hasn’t always been the best.

The Swede, 26, has suffered a severely injury-hit first season since his £125m transfer from Newcastle - including a broken leg. He remains on the sidelines and the club will be desperate to ensure he has enough cover around him next term.

Hugo Ekitike was signed from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69m last summer. The Frenchman has hit 17 goals in all competitions across his debut season - but his campaign is at an end.

The 23-year-old ruptured his achilles against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and isn’t expected to play again for up to a year.

Getting the right kind of No9 to deputise in the meantime will be crucial and all the indications are that the sporting director Richard Hughes won’t spend big on a forward.

Therefore promoting a young talent who is ready from the youth and underage ranks would appear to be an ideal solution.

New deal for Keyrol Figueroa

Up until very recently it looked impossible for Keyrol Figueroa to fulfil that duty.

The 19-year-old has recently returned from injury - but has been in sparkling form for Rob Page’s Premier League 2 side this season.

Liverpool were worried about Figueroa’s future - with his current contract expiring in summer 2026. The Honduran was linked with a move in the January window - with Porto and PSV both thought to be keen.

It looked as though Figueroa was going to run down his deal in order to have his pick of clubs in the summer window. But now a dramatic U-turn appears to have taken place.

Despite signing with Federico Pastorello’s high-profile P&P Sport Management agency in anticipation of a move it now looks as though Figueroa will STAY.

Keyrol Figueroa decides his future

According to a new report in the Liverpool Echo the sharpshooter is set to agree a new contract and pledge his future to his boyhood club.

“The 19-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season with the likes of Porto and PSV Eindhoven being linked with an interest earlier this year,” the report reads.

“However, the ECHO understands it is expected the player will sign a new deal to extend his commitment to the Reds, although the agreement has not yet been finalised.”

It’s been a big week for Figueroa - who pledged his international allegiance to Honduras. A former USA U20 international he has now made the switch to represent the land of his birth.

Maynor Figueroa is an integral figure in Honduran football history and now his son will follow in his illustrious footsteps.

Atletico Madrid closely monitoring versatile Barcelona forward – report

Atletico Madrid closely monitoring versatile Barcelona forward – report: Atletico Madrid closely monitoring versatile Barcelona forward – reportAtletico Madrid closely monitoring versatile Barcelona forward – report

According to a report from SPORT, it has come to light that Atletico Madrid are monitoring the situation of Barcelona forward Ferran Torres with keen interest.

The outlet mentions that the Barcelona attacker remains highly appreciated by several figures within Atletico’s structure, but perhaps nobody values him more than sporting director Mateu Alemany.

Notably, it was Alemany himself who played a key role in bringing the Spanish international to Barcelona during his previous spell at the club.

Now, Atletico continue to follow Ferran’s situation carefully despite there currently being no advanced negotiations between the two clubs.

Atletico Madrid see Ferran as perfect fit

The outlet mentions that Ferran is viewed as an ideal profile for Diego Simeone because of the qualities he brings without the ball as much as with it.

Ferran is capable of operating across multiple attacking positions, whether centrally or from wider areas, while also offering the aggressive pressing, mobility and defensive work rate that Simeone demands from his forwards.

Even though the Spaniard has not always been an automatic starter at Barcelona, his numbers this season have remained solid, scoring 21 goals and two assists.

Ferran is happy at Barcelona

The operation, as things stand, remains complicated because neither Barcelona nor Ferran currently appear eager to separate

The forward continues to feel important within the squad, while Barcelona themselves are entering a delicate moment offensively as they prepare for life after Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish striker is approaching the final stage of his Barcelona career, and the Catalan club are already actively searching for a long-term replacement in the market.

Could be central to Barcelona’s plans

One of the names admired most is Julian Alvarez, but Atletico Madrid have no intention of making negotiations easy.

The club understand that signing Alvarez would require a massive investment that currently looks extremely difficult to complete.

This is why they explored alternatives such as Joao Pedro, although even those deals remain financially complicated at this stage.

Now, if Lewandowski departs this summer, Ferran would effectively become the only recognised striker at Barcelona and losing him without first securing a replacement would create a sporting problem for Hansi Flick.

At the same time, there is growing speculation that Barcelona could eventually explore using Ferran as part of the operation to reduce the cost of a potential Alvarez deal.

However, the problem is that Atletico remain keen on keeping the Argentine rather than negotiating creative swap arrangements.

Saturday’s sports press wakes up to the echoes of the crisis at Real Madrid. The situation inside the club after ending the season without trophies has finally exploded, dominating the front pages of the main newspapers with three interconnected storylines: the imminent return of José Mourinho, a dressing room split into irreconcilable factions, and Kylian Mbappé’s critical situation.

The Bernabéu bench already has its man to lead the rebuild. MARCA leads emphatically, stating that José Mourinho is Florentino Pérez’s personal choice and that his arrival will happen “unless there is a radical and unexpected twist.”

A fragmented dressing room

The root of the crisis is not strictly tactical, but about coexistence. Managing the egos within the squad has reached the point of no return, dividing the group into internal camps.

Mundo Deportivo leads with a powerful visual impact, splitting its front page in half to show the total disconnect between the two main figures in Madrid’s attack. They report “irreconcilable differences” that are tearing apart a “blown-up dressing room.”

The ‘Mbappé Case’, front-page news in Spain and abroad

The epicenter of the media earthquake has a name. The French star finds himself at the crossroads of tensions directly involving the club’s top brass, the outgoing coaching staff, and his own entourage.

9d6993a456c4aaa23ffc175b9fdf28c8

AS shows on its front page a face-to-face meeting between Florentino Pérez and the French forward. The presidential summit’s main objective is to “put out the fire and assess his physical and emotional state.”

bdc6e04be6a023361a70e3a38c48a9df

Meanwhile, the shockwave is hitting France hard. L'Équipe devotes its main front page to the star’s frustration after a disappointing season. They report that Mbappé publicly criticized his coach Álvaro Arbeloa’s decisions after the match against Oviedo (where he started on the bench), calling it a “symptom of the current unrest with his club and his entourage.”

Joao Pedro target: Summit in London over the striker

The transfer market is also moving strongly in Barcelona, putting the Brazilian attacker in the spotlight. The Catalan press reports that Barça’s sporting director has traveled directly to London, taking advantage of the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The Blaugrana hierarchy sees the signing of the Chelsea striker as an absolute priority to strengthen the attack for next season; however, the deal remains dependent on the Catalan club first completing at least one major sale in order to comply with the 1:1 financial regulation.

Juve, Bernardo Silva’s agent expected in Turin

Juventus continue to work quietly on Bernardo Silva. As reported by Tuttosport, the Portuguese playmaker’s agent is expected in Turin in the coming days to assess the feasibility of the deal and discuss a possible long-term contract.

The main issue remains the high salary of the Manchester City player, but the Bianconeri management want to make a serious attempt to secure an international-level signing for next season.

Milan, Tare also under scrutiny

After last night’s debacle against Atalanta and the fierce protests from the Curva Sud, there is a sense of crisis and change at Milan. According to Matteo Moretto, sporting director Igli Tare has also come under observation from the Rossoneri ownership.

In the last few hours, the name of Tony D’Amico has resurfaced as a possible alternative for the sporting area, confirming that the club is considering several changes ahead of the summer.

Inter, City’s Ruben Dias is a target

Inter have reportedly set their sights on Ruben Dias to strengthen their defense. The Portuguese center-back is highly appreciated for his leadership and international experience, but according to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City consider the defender one of the pillars of the squad and do not seem willing to let him go.

For now, Inter’s link to Ruben Dias is more of a suggestion than a real negotiation.

Napoli, Gila is the number one target for the defense

Napoli have decided to speed things up for Mario Gila. According to Corriere dello Sport, the Lazio center-back is considered the top name to strengthen the Azzurri back line, and the club have already intensified contacts in recent hours.

The transfer fee is between €20 million and €25 million, but complicating the deal is a clause that grants 50% of any future resale of the 2000-born player to Real Madrid.

Roma, new shortlist for sporting director

Roma continue their search for a new sporting director to replace Massara. According to the ForzaRoma portal, an introductory meeting with Pafos’ Cristiano Giaretta is expected in the coming hours. In Italy, he worked at Novara and then at Udinese from 2013 to 2016.

Tony D’Amico is also still waiting in the wings, a profile that continues to appeal to the Giallorossi club for his scouting ability and sporting management skills. The club want to take the necessary time before making a final decision in order to build the new technical project in the best possible way.

Lazio, three names for the attack

With the Coppa Italia final just around the corner and the weekend derby approaching, Lazio are already thinking about the future and looking for opportunities on the market. As reported by Corriere dello Sport, several profiles have ended up in sporting director Fabiani’s notebook, including Kaique Kenji of Cruzeiro and Bamba Dieng, the Senegalese striker from Lorient.

That’s not all: the Biancoceleste management are also said to be evaluating Omar Janneh, the very young Lausanne striker who is also being watched by Sporting Lisbon.

Fiorentina, Paratici prepares a signing from Serie B

There is a sense of revolution at Fiorentina after a season well below expectations. For this reason, sporting director Fabio Paratici is already moving to strengthen the squad and, according to FiorentinaUno, he has set his sights on Catanzaro’s Mattia Liberali, currently involved in the playoffs.

The 2007-born talent, who came through Milan’s youth academy, is coming off a season with 3 goals and 4 assists. His transfer fee is estimated at around €7 million.

Mourinho’s two conditions to return to Real Madrid as talks reach advanced stage: Mourinho’s two conditions to return to Real Madrid as talks reach advanced stageMourinho’s two conditions to return to Real Madrid as talks reach advanced stage

Real Madrid find themselves in a dire situation after being battered by FC Barcelona last night, which meant the Catalans were crowned La Liga champions after winning El Clasico at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Changes are incoming within the club, with Florentino Perez looking to shake things up after two seasons with a major trophy and the utter turmoil in the dressing room.

Jose Mourinho, to that end, has emerged as the frontrunner to become the next Real Madrid manager, replacing Alvaro Arbeloa, who will vacate his post at the end of the season.

Talks advanced between Perez and Jorge Mendes

Providing an update on the situation, journalist Ben Jacobs reports that talks are now at an advanced stage between Perez and Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes.

This is despite the current SL Benfica head coach publicly denying that he has had any approach from Real Madrid so far.

Perez is the driving force behind the search for a new manager and sees Mourinho as the ideal candidate as he hopes to bring in a cultural shift at Real Madrid.

Talks are advanced between the two camps and more meetings are scheduled this week to try and finalise the Portuguese’s homecoming.

Meanwhile, an alternate report from AS states that Mourinho has already analysed the situation at Real Madrid and set out two key conditions for taking the job.

The first relates to having a say in transfer planning. Not necessarily naming specific players, but influencing which positions the squad needs to strengthen. His reading of the current squad is that it is unbalanced in several areas.

The second condition relates to the club’s internal structure. Mourinho is not focused on changing the entire hierarchy, but he does want strict respect for roles and clear authority within the first-team environment.

In his view, the head coach must have full control of the dressing room without interference. The aim is to avoid situations like those experienced this season with Vinicius Jr. and Xabi Alonso – situations that could destabilize the squad and hinder performance.

From next weekend, Real Madrid will have a ten-day window to activate his release clause, understood to be around €3 million, allowing him to leave Benfica after their final match of the season.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City hatch transfer plan for Bundesliga starlet – Bayern Munich interested

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City hatch transfer plan for Bundesliga starlet – Bayern Munich interested: Pep Guardiola and Manchester City hatch transfer plan for Bundesliga starlet – Bayern Munich interestedPep Guardiola and Manchester City hatch transfer plan for Bundesliga starlet – Bayern Munich interested
  • Manchester City are aiming to trigger the release clause of 16-year-old Hertha BSC sensation Kennet Eichhorn, widely regarded as the brightest talent in the 2. Bundesliga.
  • Pep Guardiola has reportedly sanctioned a buy-and-loan model to beat the likes of Bayern Munich to the midfielder’s signature.
  • A complex release clause ranging from €10 million to €12 million becomes active this summer, making the teenager a high-value opportunity for the Premier League giants.

Manchester City are targeting a deal for highly-rated Bundesliga starlet Kennet Eichhorn via the teenager’s release clause, before loaning him back to Germany.

The pursuit of Eichhorn marks a strategic pivot for Manchester City’s recruitment team, now overseen by Sporting Director Hugo Viana, with the Etihad club looking to leverage their relationship with European clubs to secure talents before their market value heightens.

This move follows the club’s successful integration of young continental stars and comes at a time when the first-team squad is currently undergoing another, yet subtle, refresh amid a gruelling title race with Arsenal.

Kennet Eichhorn has been a revelation for Hertha BSC this season, defying his age to become a mainstay in their midfield with his advanced technical security and vision, as well as a physical profile that some could view as suitable to English football.

His profile – a hybrid of a traditional number eight and a modern playmaker – has alerted every major European powerhouse, but Manchester City’s willingness to offer an immediate developmental pathway in Germany could give them the edge.

A Bundesliga battle? The race for Kennet Eichhorn

According to Sky Sports Germany, Kennet Eichhorn plans to leave Hertha BSC this summer, amid strong interest elsewhere within the Bundesliga from the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and Bayer Leverkusen.

The latter are claimed to have shown particular interest in the midfielder and are pushing hard, although there is said to be notice taken of the attacking player’s rise from clubs within the Premier League.

From Germany: Manchester City make direct contact with Hertha Berlin prodigy’s camp

Pep Guardiola is said to personally want to bring the youngster to Manchester City, with the idea being for the Etihad Stadium club to purchase the 16-year-old and immediately loan him to Bayer Leverkusen for the 2026/27 season.

Eichhorn remains under contract until 2029, although a release clause will take effect this summer worth between €10 million and €12 million, depending on which league Hertha plays in, the country he moves to, and the competition in which the purchasing club participates in.

Manchester City’s strong Leverkusen bond

The proposal to loan Kennet Eichhorn directly to Bayer Leverkusen is a shrewd piece of business that reflects Manchester City’s long-term tactical planning, as Leverkusen continues to become a suitable home for elite midfielders.

“It was a difficult few months” – Claudio Echeverri breaks silence on unsuccessful Bayer Leverkusen loan

City seemingly believe that a season of high-level development there would prepare the 16-year-old for the physical rigours of the Premier League by 2027, or perhaps a further loan elsewhere in the European game given the player certainly having time on his side.

Speculation is expected to intensify by the time the summer market opens as Eichhorn’s camp weighs up the offer, with Manchester City continuing to future-proof their playing squad well beyond the expected years of Pep Guardiola’s tenure.

Lamine Yamal makes Champions League promise to Barcelona fans during title parade

Just 18 years old, Lamine Yamal has already won three La Liga titles since making his first-team breakthrough at FC Barcelona, with the latest one getting added this past Sunday after the Catalans beat Real Madrid in El Clasico.

No player in the club’s history had ever achieved such a feat at such a young age, but the La Masia graduate, already known for breaking records early, has added another title to his growing collection.

However, three league titles, two Spanish Super Cups and a Copa del Rey are not enough for the teenager, as he made clear during the ongoing title bus parade.

During the parade, Lamine spoke to Barça’s media channels and thanked the supporters who packed the streets to celebrate the title.

“It’s incredible. They’re always with us, on the important days and also on the less important ones. This is the club of our lives. We’ll always be here for them. We love them,” said the Barça forward.

However, after stressing the importance of appreciating every trophy, he ended with a promise that immediately excited supporters.

“We have to value every title and every year that we win because it’s not easy. We’ve gone through some very difficult years, but now we’re enjoying ourselves a lot,” said Lamine.

“You think it’s a Monday, people in Barcelona have work, but they’re still here with us. A Champions League parade? Definitely yes,” he added.

After Barcelona’s elimination against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals earlier this season, the winger had already sent a message of belief:

“My parents taught me that a man always keeps his word… and we’ll bring it back to Barcelona.”
