“I understand” – Rodri issues fresh update on Manchester City future

“I understand” – Rodri issues fresh update on Manchester City future: “I understand” – Rodri issues fresh update on Manchester City future“I understand” – Rodri issues fresh update on Manchester City future
  • Rodri has stated he will block out all contract and transfer distractions until the conclusion of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.
  • Following Pep Guardiola’s departure, elite suitors – headlined by Spanish giants Real Madrid – have reportedly placed the 29-year-old on their summer target lists.
  • The unsettling update lands precisely as incoming manager Enzo Maresca and Sporting Director Hugo Viana finalise a three-year contract to guide the club’s post-Guardiola era.

Manchester City’s Rodri has insisted he will not be thinking about his club future until after the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.

Following the monumental news that Pep Guardiola has officially brought his legendary decade-long tenure to a close, Manchester City’s hierarchy has moved decisively, finalising a deal to install former assistant Enzo Maresca into the Etihad Stadium dugout.

Despite City ending their gruelling 2025/26 campaign on a high with an impressive FA Cup and Carabao Cup domestic double, pushing through a further squad refresh remains the top priority for Sporting Director Hugo Viana.

The underlying anxiety surrounding the first-team spine has intensified following the end of the season, particularly with media speculation connecting defensive pillars Rรบben Dias and Joลกko Gvardiol with potential moves away.

While the club initiated positive advanced contract extensions with key assets like winger Jรฉrรฉmy Doku, Rodri’s status as a fundamental anchor makes any ambiguity regarding his position critical. With only a year left on his contract, Real Madrid are claimed to have positioned themselves to test City’s resolve.

Rodri places Man City future talks on hold

Now, speaking to reporters from the Spanish national team’s training base, Rodri was quizzed by reporters on the FIFA World Cup and the nation’s hopes for the tournament, as well as whether fans should be on alert for developments concerning his future.

“I understand there might be some noise, but for me I’m obviously going to focus on the World Cup,” the Manchester City midfielder insisted.

He continued, “I’m not going to dedicate my time to that, and then after the World Cup let’s see.”

This is a developing story. More to follow.

Noa Lang ‘can’t wait’ to return to Napoli from Galatasaray after Conte departure

Noa Lang’s father says that his son ‘can’t wait’ to get back to work with Napoli following the departure of head coach Antonio Conte, with whom the Netherlands international never really clicked.

Lang was one of many players that Napoli signed during the last summer transfer window ahead of their return to Champions League action in 2025-26. He was brought in for a fee of €25m plus up to €3m in bonuses from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

He made 18 Serie A appearances during the first half of the season, but was only named in the starting XI on seven occasions. The lack of opportunities and a lack of understanding with Conte led to his joining Galatasaray on loan during the January transfer window.

Lang admitted soon after that he did not get on well with Conte during their first few months together: “How can I explain it simply? I didn’t get along with the coach,” he said, bluntly.

“Let’s leave it at that. I know that in the Netherlands people often think it’s my fault, but one day everything will be clear. For now, I have a lot of respect for the club I’m under contract with. I have a good relationship with almost everyone at the club.”

Galatasaray’s deal for Lang included a non-mandatory option to buy, but they are not expected to activate that option during the summer transfer window.

This means that Lang will return to Napoli after the World Cup, and he will find Massimiliano Allegri in charge this time, rather than Conte.

Noa Lang father comments on Napoli return: ‘He can’t wait’

Lang’s father, Jeffrey, says that his son ‘can’t wait’ to get back to work at the Stadio Maradona.

“Noa can’t wait,” said Jeffrey Lang in an interview with De Telegraaf from the Netherlands national team training camp. “He wants to succeed there. In the end, your feet have to do the talking, so it’s up to him to prove it.”

Lang is part of the Netherlands squad for the upcoming World Cup, but even his father says that he expects stiff competition for game time at the tournament.

“As long as Cody (Gakpo) is doing well, Noa will have to wait patiently for his turn, prove himself in training and then take the opportunity when it presents itself.”

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has addressed the growing speculation linking him with Real Madrid, insisting that his full attention is currently on Spain’s World Cup campaign rather than his club future.

The Ballon d’Or winner has once again found himself at the centre of transfer rumours in recent weeks, particularly following claims surrounding Real Madrid’s presidential elections.

However, the Spanish international has now spoken publicly about the situation and made it clear where his priorities lie.

While Rodri did not completely dismiss the speculation, he also avoided giving any indication that a move is currently being considered.

Breaking silence on Real Madrid speculation

The midfielder’s name has featured prominently in recent transfer discussions involving Real Madrid.

Part of the speculation emerged during the club’s presidential election process, as presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme appears to have an agreement in place with a Spanish international

Rodri’s name quickly became one of the players linked to those claims.

However, people close to the Manchester City midfielder have denied that any such agreement exists.

With the rumours continuing to circulate, Rodri was asked directly about his future during Spain’s World Cup preparations, to which he said,

“It’s quite normal for players’ names to be linked with different clubs. I’m captain of the national team and I’m fully focused.

“My job is to lead Spain to victory in this World Cup. It might sound like a lot of noise, but as far as I’m concerned, I’m going to focus on the World Cup, and we’ll see what happens.”

The comments neither confirm nor deny any future interest from Real Madrid, but they do underline the player’s determination to avoid distractions during one of the biggest tournaments of his career.

Why Rodri is a dream target for Real Madrid

It is easy to understand why Rodri continues to be linked with Real Madrid.

Since Toni Kroos’ departure, the Spanish giants have been searching for greater control and consistency in midfield, and few players in world football offer those qualities better than Rodri.

The Manchester City star has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the game thanks to his positioning, passing range, defensive intelligence and leadership qualities.

At both the club and international level, he has become the player around whom entire systems are built.

That profile naturally makes him attractive to Real Madrid, particularly as the club continue evaluating long-term midfield solutions.

Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric is to leave Ipswich Town and join Serie A side Sassuolo.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan with the Italian club, making 32 appearances and keeping six clean sheets as Sassuolo finished in 11th place.

Muric, who is a Kosovo international, joined Ipswich from Burnley for an initial fee of £10m in July 2024 but only featured in 18 league games as the Suffolk side were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

He started his career with Manchester City, making five appearances in the League Cup, before spending time on loan at clubs including NAC Breda, Nottingham Forest and Girona.

Sassuolo have exercised the option to make Muric's move permanent for an undisclosed fee.
